Interview with Chesterfield goalkeeper Melvin Minter
A chat with Melvin Minter- Spireites’ new goalkeeper
Melvin Minter recently put pen to paper with Chesterfield on a one year deal as James Rowe added the final pieces to his jigsaw. Minter will come and push Scott Loach for the the number one spot at The Technique Stadium.
Minter has had an unorthodox rise through the footballing pyramid, starting out at youth set up’s with Oxford and Brentford then eventually going on to sign for non league clubs such as Hendon, Whitehawk, and Farnborough. His last club at non league level permanently was Kings Langley where he impressed newly promoted football league side Harrogate Town. He arrived there on a free transfer and a loan move to Darlington followed.
After leaving Harrogate, Minter found himself looking for a club and he arrived at The Technique on trial looking to impress. A excellent save against Bradford in pre season gave fans and James Rowe alike a glimpse of what he could offer. Eventually he earned a deal for the season with the Blues and he’ll be hoping to compete with Scott Loach throughout this season.
I had a chat with the 26 year old about his move to the Spireites.
I asked Melvin what James Rowe’s message was to him once he offered him a trial.
“The message from the manager was to enjoy the process and keep my head down working hard. Thankfully, it turned out how I wanted as a result.”
Spending almost all his career at lower step teams Melvin commented on his thoughts after signing for Chesterfield.
“It’s very pleasing and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
“There’s big targets set within the club and the aim is to go one better than last season. It’s a huge club with history behind it but we have to earn the right and progress collectively.”
Melvin added his delight for signing for a club with such history and ambition.
“I’m excited about the new challenge ahead. It’s also very good that the supporters will be back in stadiums to help drive the side. The aim is to get promoted for them as we’ve got a big competitive squad.”
“Having seen the clubs progress in previous years, I believe we’ll be challenging at the top end of the table this season.”
Minter, who’ll wear the number 13 shirt, has been travelling with the squad despite not being in the match day squad as of yet but he’ll have a part to play just like everyone else at the club this season.
