Sam Morsy Interview: ’I’m Sure I’ll Be Back To Chesterfield’ 

Sam Morsy left the Spireites in 2016 to join Wigan Athletic and has enjoyed a very successful and eventful career ever since to add to his previous successful spells at Chesterfield and Port Vale. Morsy is now club captain at Ipswich Town who have their own promotion hopes for this season. 

I asked Sam how his season at Ipswich was going so far?

“I’m enjoying the season, we’re in a good position with everything to play for but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”

At 31, Morsy has represented his national team Egypt 7 times with hopefully more to come. 

On his career so far, Morsy said: “I’m proud I’ve played at the level I have and represented my country there was no guarantee I’d be a professional so everything is a big bonus for me.” 

Morsy helped Chesterfield lift the 2013-14 League Two title and also featured in the final of the 2014 Football League Trophy. 

Morsy touched on his affiliation with The Spireites and his thoughts after leaving Derbyshire: “I’ve always followed Chesterfield since I left, it will always be a club close to my heart. I hope they can be victorious this season.” 

Morsy still predominantly plays as a defensive midfielder but his game has adapted and changed significantly since leaving Chesterfield. He has four goals and four assists in the league so far this season and some what predictably ten yellow cards. 

“It seems like a life time ago I was at Chesterfield so I’m a different player to when I was there.”

Morsy was awarded Wigan’s player of the year award for the 2019-20 campaign and in September of 2020 he joined Middlesborough but after just one season at The Riverside he followed Paul Cook to Ipswich. 

A true fan favourite amongst Spireite supporters here’s what Morsy had to say on the prospect of one day returning to Chesterfield: “Who knows what the future holds, I’m sure in some capacity I will be back.”
