The return of Super Kev

The return of Super Kev

Kevin Davies is returning to the team he joined as a 15 year old following his release from Sheffield United. Kevin quickly progressed through the ranks at Chesterfield and became the Spireites second youngest player aged 16 years and 176 days. The youngest player being Dennis Thompson who was just 16 years and 159 days.

This is the first time Kevin has returned to Chesterfield for a competitive match since his £750,000 deal to Southampton way back in 1997 (18 years ago). After impressing in his first season, scoring 9 times in 25 games. Davies then moved on from Southampton to Blackburn in the following season for 7.5 million pounds, unfortunately for Chesterfield no sell on clause was agreed. Failing to impress at Blackburn, Davies rejoined Southampton in a swap deal for Egil Ostenstad. He then moved onto Bolton in 2003 where he remained 10 years before signing for Preston North End.

Super Kev returns as a very different player that left the Spireites. During his time here Kevin was used mainly as an intelligent and skilful wide player compared with the aggressive, ball winning striker he is known as today. Davies is cited as the Premier League player that was committed most fouls, but also features near the top of the list of the most fouled players.

This reputation earned him an international call up in 2010 at the age of 33 making him the oldest player to earn an England cap since the 1950's.

Kev will hopefully receive a great reception before and after the game by a big crowd at the Proact, with many Spireites having fond memories of Davies and many fans following his career after leaving Chesterfield.

Another former Spireite returning tonight is Daniel Johnson who has signed a 2 and a half year contract with Preston.
