Woodseats to New York City

Speculation started off on Wednesday the 3rd of December when league one leaders Bristol City were linked with the Irish goal scoring sensation, Millwall were soon to follow later that day and the Eoin Doyle race began.

Chesterfield assistant manager Leam Richardson speaking on Doyle,

''His goals speak for themselves''

''He's the hottest property in the country, he'll be on everyones list and he will be top on a lot of them''

''We expect we'll have a lot of phone calls''

Richardson continued

''We're a very good club and Eoin doesn't plan to leave and he is very happy where he is at the minute, he's just had a new baby, he's family is very settled and he's scoring goals and enjoying himself''

On the 5th of December Sky Sports reported that Reading had joined the party and were set to bid for Eoin Doyle once the transfer window had opened. This was followed up later that week on the 10th with the interest of Premier League side Burnley.

The 29th of December saw the Sheffield clubs declaring interesting in Doyle Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Grey has confirmed that ''Chesterfield striker Eoin Doyle is someone who is on their radar.'' While on the other side of the city the Blades, Sheffield United made the first enquires about Doyle and also suggested a potential swap deal to the Spireites.

A busy few days on the transfer speculation front were to follow on the 31st of December with the Irish Independent reporting that Promotion chasing Derby County, SPL Champs Celtic and former Premier League side Cardiff City all having joined the hunt for Irish striker Eoin Doyle.

Leading to Chesterfield CEO Chris Turner to declare that "tentative enquiries" about Eoin Doyle have been received, but no concrete offers have been made. He added that when you have the countries leading goal scores you will always attract interest.

Manager Paul Cook took to the press to say

''if you're doing well people are after your players''

When asked do you think Eoin Doyle will be here February 1st Cook added

''if you ask my truthfully, i'd say probably not, that's great credit to Eoin but do I want him to be here, of course''

''I must be fair to Eoin, the club must be fair to Eoin, there has been interest in Eoin, strong interest in Eoin, when you've scored as many goals as Eoin has and it's not just his goals - it's behind the scenes''

''there is strong interest in Eoin Doyle, but that the club have a strong chairman who won't sell players unless the deal is right.''

This also lead to Blades boss Nigel Clough becoming more dismissive of the link with Doyle and a potential swap deal with Sheffield United player Higdon.

The sixth of January saw Cardiff City's bid for Rotherham striker Alex Revell which many believed would give  give green light for the transfer merry go round to begin. Cardiff City boss Russell Slade is in the market for a striker and appears to have chosen Alex Revell over Eion Doyle. This in turn did see Rotherham United on the 7th of January offer a reported 600k plus Matt Derbyshire or former Spireite Jordan Bowery.

The 15th of January then saw Steve McClaren declare that ''Yes, he is on our doorstep and we have scouts most weeks at Chesterfield games'' and ''Eoin Doyle is someone everyone is interested in''

The 28th of January saw the Irish Independent report that ''Sheffield United are in pole position'' to sign Eoin Doyle before the transfer window closes.

This was nothing new to Spireites fans, with Sheffield United being the first team to show interest for Doyle this transfer window. The fee rumoured by the Irish Independent is also nothing Spireites haven't heard before with £600,000 being the figure touted.

January 30th saw Paul Cook asked the question if Doyle would remain come the end of the transfer window and him reply ''probably yes''

On the same day Preston's odds were slashed and rumours circulated about it being a straight fight between Preston and Sheffield United.

The 31st saw Wigan linked with a move for the Irishman and the Irish Mirror and Irish Sun report that New York City had bidded for Doyle and he was set to link up with David Villa and Frank Lampard.

Now is transfer deadline day and no bids have reached Chesterfield's valuation of Doyle and they hope none will! The Spireites do have targets in mind if an offer reached the valuation set.
