Caretaker Manager Factfile : Mark Smith

It has been announced that academy manager Mark Smith has been named caretaker manager of Chesterfield FC and will be assisted by Mark Crossley and Paul Mitchell.



Mark Craig Smith, born 21 March 1960, is a former professional footballer is the current academy manager at Chesterfield.


Mark is an England under-21 international and played 510 league appearances in a seventeen-years. His footballing career started at Sheffield Wednesday where he made 282 league appearances. Smith had good success at the owls where he won promotion twice and reached the FA Cup semi-finals twice. He also played 100 times for Barnsley and six times for the Spireites in 1993.

Smith was then youth coach at Lincoln City and Notts County before becoming assistant manager to current Premier League boss Sam Allardyce at the Magpies.

In 1998 Smith rejoined old team Barnsley as a youth cup where he had great success, he reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final in 2001/02, defeat coming at the hands of eventual winners Aston Villa, the run including the defeat of Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford on 1 March 2002. The following season they knocked Liverpool out of the FA Youth Cup and the runners-up spot in the FA Premier Academy League Group B.

Smith then moved back to his other major former club Sheffield Wednesday as a youth coach. Following the departure of current Chesterfield CEO Chris Turner as Wednesday's manager, Smith had one game as caretaker manager, winning 1-0.

Smith also had a spell as a development coach at Sheffield United.

He was appointed as youth team coach at Chesterfield in May 2013. Currently Smith is academy manager at Chesterfield FC, last season he had great success as youth team manager which saw the Spireites have a great FA Youth Cup run and finish second in the league, having challenged all season.
