Chesterfield Feeder Club Nears Europa League

Europa Point are just three matches away from UEFA Europa League football!

In August 2014, Chesterfield FC announced a partnership between themselves and Gibraltar team Europa Point. As part of the agreement the Spireites get first call on any Europa Point players, while Europa form links with a football league club.

Europa Point FC is an amateur Gibraltar football team playing in the Gibraltar Second Division. Formed in 2014 by Club Chairman John Gontier, Europa Point FC is a team with a unique footballing philosophy. Their vision is to give a second chance to talented young players. With the incentive of possible European football, Europa Point FC aims to be the platform for young players to showcase their talent with the hope of getting these players back into professional football.

Club President John Gontier is proud of his links with Chesterfield FC which has already seen Spireites fans travel to Gibraltar, which lies just off the south of Spain, to support the Europa Point youngsters.

''We are the youngest team in Gibraltar'' said Gontier ''The club's aim is to be a stepping stone for young players to progress''

Football in Gibraltar is dominated by Lincoln Red Imps. Thirteen out of the twenty three Gibraltar national team are Lincoln Red Imps players. This wealth of talent on one team has seen them win the Gibraltar Premier Division 11 years in a row and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Europa Point FC find themselves second in the Gibraltar Second Division with 9 games remaining to play.

''We are the top scorers in the league'' commented Gontier. This season has seen them win games with score lines such as 6-0 twice, 7-2,  7-0, 8-1, 9-0 twice and even 12-0 earlier in the season and they average over a 4 goal win every match!

Many goals have come from former AFC Wimbledon player Anderson Pinto as well as Robert Montovio and two players called Hulk and Alexis Sanchez who it's said play very similar to their well known name sakes!

Another player who is scoring lots of goals is Dexter Atkinson, Dexter joined Europa Point FC having previously played for Sheffield FC and Chesterfield FC. The pacey foward with an eye for goal, Dexter first impressed Chesterfield staff by scoring six goals in three trial games which earned him a two year deal with the youth academy.

Gontier commented ''Chesterfield released player Dexter Atkinson, send by Liam Sutcliffe, is one goal away from being top scorer having played a third of the matches as others''

On Saturday Europa Point take on Lynx FC (who are currently third in the Premier Division) in the Rock Cup. The winner of the cup earns themselves a place in the UEFA Europa League. You can view Europa Point's last round 5-0 win on this video below.

Spireite Gazette would like to wish good luck to our feeder club and lets hope that Europa Point qualify for the Europa League!
