Europa Point top goalscorer set for trial with Chesterfield first team

The Spireite Gazette have spoken to Europa Point FC chairman John Gontier about the Chesterfield FC feeder clubs progress in it's first full season.

"Dexter Atkinson, who was sent to us by Liam Sutcliffe, has been called for a trial for the Chesterfield first team." commented the Europa Point FC chairman.

''He would walk into the U21'' he added ''but for the first team only a daring manager would do it. It happens to one in every hundred!''

Dexter joined Europa Point FC having previously played for Sheffield FC and Chesterfield FC. The speedy forward with an eye for goal first impressed Chesterfield staff by scoring six goals in three trial games which earned him a deal with the youth academy.

In August 2014, Chesterfield FC announced a partnership between themselves and Gibraltar team Europa Point. As part of the agreement the Spireites get first call on any Europa Point players, while Europa form links with a football league club.

Europa Point FC is an amateur Gibraltar football team playing in the Gibraltar Second Division. Formed in 2014 by Club Chairman John Gontier, Europa Point FC is a team with a unique footballing philosophy. Their vision is to give a second chance to talented young players. With the incentive of possible European football, Europa Point FC aims to be the platform for young players to showcase their talent with the hope of getting these players back into professional football.

Europa Point scored a massive 150 goals in just 26 games last season with a goal difference of 104! The leagues top scorer was Dexter Atkinson despite him joining the team midway through the season.

John Gontier also told us about the three young players that had visited the Spireites in April.

''As for the Antonio, Alexis and Andrew who were there in April, again difficult for Antonio and Alexis who are both now 19.''

''However, Andrew Hernandez, Gibraltar U19 international being only 16 has been asked to return, as in April not much of him could be seen due to his injury. I`m sure he would walk into the U18 side and be offered to stay for the season.''

Club President John Gontier is proud of his links with Chesterfield FC which has already seen Spireites fans travel to Gibraltar, which lies just off the south of Spain, to support the Europa Point youngsters.

''We are the youngest team in Gibraltar'' said Gontier ''The club's aim is to be a stepping stone for young players to progress''
